Advanced Platform Kinematics (APK):

 

One very important feature of the Moog FCS motion system technology is its Advanced Platform Kinematics (APK), a motion cueing algorithm developed by the company after many man-years of research and development. Conventional motion platforms are controlled by systems providing onset acceleration cues, with wash-out terms to bring the platform to the neutral position at a rate imperceptible to the crew. APK optimizes wash-out to a point in a multi-dimensional space which provides the maximum work space to provide the next motion cue. APK is based on complex mathematics with adaptive controls, learning systems and predictive algorithms. APK algorithms have been tailored to achieve real-time computation and actuator control to increase the usable work space for a given system by some 40%, by optimization of the cueing parameters. We have demonstrated this vast improvement in motion cueing using APK on two DC-10 simulators at FedEx - one from CAE and the other from Link - which have both been upgraded with the Moog FCS Motion Electronics and APK software; the conventional motion cueing and the Moog FCS cueing software could be switched to show the improvements from the latter.

 

Electric Motion (E-Cue) systems offer many advantages over conventional hydraulic systems.

Lower acquisition and operating costs, ease of installation, superior aesthetics and simpler facility requirements (without the need for HPU room, floor trenches, etc.) are some of the key benefits offered by E-Cue. Also, E-Cue systems are environmental friendly (without oil leaks / sprays / disposal problems, etc.). In terms of technical specifications, they outperform their hydraulic counterparts in every aspect except in maximum payload capacity. The frequency response of E-Cue systems exceed 10 Hz, whilst hydraulic systems can manage to get up to 5 Hz. E-Cue systems have zero cross coupling, providing pure translational and rotational movements.
